The questions of this study were as follows: (1) What content and techniques did selected elementary general music teachers and this researcher observe in self-selected elementary general music lessons taught by themselves, and what explanation and evaluation did the teachers give for their work? (2) What did selected elementary general music teachers identify as effective or ineffective about a videotape recorded lesson taught by another elementary general music teacher? (3) In what ways did selected elementary general music teachers find viewing videotapes of their own instruction and the instruction of another elementary general music teacher beneficial, and what changes should have been made, if any, to their evaluation process?

A qualitative study was completed to consider the complex nature of teaching as viewed by the teachers themselves and to analyze the content of teachers' evaluations of instructional practice (Wheeler, 1995). During fall 2004, four elementary general music teachers were interviewed four times by use of self-selected videotapes of their own instruction and a videotape of a lesson taught by another elementary general music teacher. The teachers were encouraged to stop the videotapes during the interviews to comment on the instruction and teaching practice.

Verbatim transcripts of the interviews were used for analysis. Descriptions of the teachers, their lessons, and evaluations of their lessons and the lesson of another elementary general music teacher were provided in the results. Teachers' discussions were summarized in the following categories: (1) facilities, equipment, and physical environment; (2) singing; (3) rhythm; (4) listening; (5) movement; (6) teaching techniques; (7) managing classroom behavior; (8) assessment; (9) analysis of general music lesson; (10) value of video assessment. Teachers were able to identify effective instruction, and they thought the process of evaluating instruction using videotape was valuable to their teaching.
