The purpose of this study was to examine the characterization of Esau in Jewish and early Christian literature to determine whether Esau was characterized as the arch-typical apostate in that literature, and if so, to determine that characterization's implications for the warning in Hebrews 12:15-17. This work gave a brief overview of the early Jewish and Christian hermeneutics, examined the references to Esau in the OT, Extrabiblical literature, and the New Testament, and provided an evaluation of the results. This research demonstrated that Esau's characterization was uniformly negative throughout all the literature examined by the researcher, and Esau's characterization in the OT, particularly in Genesis, was an apostate. The writer of the book of Hebrews relied upon the Genesis account and, therefore, used Esau as an arch-type of an apostate in the warning of Hebrews 12:15-17.
