. Pulmonary CO diffusion capacity, lung volume, oxygen uptake and pulmonary blood flow were measured simultaneously in turtles (8-11 kg) using a gas rebreathing technique. Calculated diffusion and O$\sb2$ uptake values are approximately twice those of non-varanid reptiles and about 33% of that of resting mammals. Estimated lung-capillary O$\sb2$ gradient shows that only a small driving gradient is required for O$\sb2$ conductance across the lung. Pulmonary blood flow values relative to other reptiles were high, which based on the Fick principle results in a substantial blood convection requirement.

Distinctive anatomical features of the sea turtle respiratory system enable ventilatory flow rates equivalent to that measured in some marine mammals. Mechanical studies of intact and isolated lungs show that respiratory system compliance (10.7 $\pm$ 4.9 ml cm H$\sb2
$o
kg$\sp{-1}$) is similar to that of reptiles having less complex lungs. Peak simulated expiratory flow rate in excised lungs averaged nearly 200 ml sec$\sp{-1}
$k
g$\sp{-1}$, while during spontaneous breathing expiratory flow rates were $>

0 ml sec$\sp{-1}
$k
g$\sp{-1}$. Gas transport and diving patterns were studied in unrestrained turtles breathing air or a hypercapnic (5% CO$\sb2$) mixture. Turtles breathing air have an episodic, low frequency ventilation pattern. Inspired CO$\sb2$ produced a 20-30% increase in total ventilation but no change in dive length or tidal volume.

During spontaneous diving arterial blood gases sampled from chronically implanted catheters showed a steady decline in pO$\sb2$. While paCO$\sb2$ and pH changes were modest, plasma HCO$\sb3\sp-$ increased by as much as 200% over predive values. Turtles surfaced to breathe following depletion of lung and tissue O$\sb2$ stores.
