This research focuses on the development of phosphorus flame retardants for textile material based on the systematic study of thermal decomposition of flame retardant (FR) material and the FR itself. In this study several phosphorus flame retardants (FRs) were investigated for their effectiveness on cellulosic fiber. Pyrovatex CP (N-hydroxymethyl-3-dimethylphosphonopropionamide) which is one of the most successful FR for cellulose was investigated and proven to decompose at lower temperature below the thermal decomposition of cellulose by Cope Syn elimination mechanism. The decomposition via this mechanism led to the formation of acidic phosphate intermediates which could posphorylate cellulose at C6 position and catalyze dehydration of cellulose. Other FRs like triallylphosphate and triallaylphosphoramide were found to be less efficient on cellulose as they could not thermally decompose into acidic substructures at lower temperatures.

Thermo-oxidative decomposition of cellulose treated with several FRs was further carried out to determine essential characteristics of FRs which could make it effective on cellulose. Effective FRs like Pyrovatex CP, phosphoric acid and diammonium phosphate exhibited several characteristics like, coating effect during the burning process, reduction or no change in the heat of combustion of treated cellulose, increased activation energy of decomposition, improved char formation and less volatilization.

Studies on effect of nitrogen additives on action of phosphorus FR on cellulose indicated several important clues in understanding the much elusive phosphorus-nitrogen phenomena. Urea treated cellulose decomposed to release ammonia with less interaction with cellulose. Guanidine carbonate and melamine formaldehyde reacted with cellulose and increased the activation energy of decomposition. Analysis of residues after burning process indicated more nitrogen retention in form of nitrogen containing heterocyles. Melamine formaldehyde was found to increase the heat of combustion of treated cellulose which may be due to increased aliphatic content from unreacted methylol groups. Studies on effect of nitrogen additives on thermal decomposition of cellulose indicated protective coating phenomena. During the burning process the phosphorus FR and nitrogen additives reacted to form a protective polymeric coating on the surface of decomposing material. Chemical analysis of this coating using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Photo Electron Spectroscopy indicates a polymer (phosphorus oxynitride or phosphazene) made up of Phosphorus-Nitrogen-Oxygen bonds.

Based on thorough studies of the structure performance studies of some phosphorus FRs, novel flame retardant structures based on phosphonate and phosphate chemistry have been proposed. One of the proposed flame retardant compound, 2 (acrylamido) ethyl diethyl phosphate has been synthesized and applied to cotton. The compound has been found to be very effective in flame retarding cotton.
