The establishment of a strong therapeutic alliance has been identified as one of the main components to positive therapeutic outcome. The establishment of such an alliance has been thoroughly studied in order to provide clinicians with the tools necessary to establish such an alliance and yield positive therapeutic outcome. Unfortunately, there are several factors that make the establishment of such an alliance difficult with adolescent clients. This dissertation is designed to quantitatively and qualitatively explore whether or not the use of musical contribution could be used as a means of establishing a strong alliance with adolescents. Musical contribution is a music therapy technique in which client and therapist listen to client provided music together during therapy and then discuss the musical selection. This type of intervention has had success in group format, but there has not been a direct measure of its impact on therapeutic alliance in individual therapy with adolescent clients. Using a mixed quantitative-qualitative exploratory case study, the study determined that from the perspective of the therapist and the quantitative measures the intervention did not have a significant impact on the therapeutic alliance. However, according to interview data of the client's perspective, it appears that musical contribution may have had an impact on the therapeutic alliance. The major fording of this study is that it opens the door for future research on this topic.
