Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2008.
Debate about the corporation's role in society has raged for decades. At one extreme, the corporation's purpose is seen as simply maximizing shareholder return. At the other, it is seen as a social agent, contributing to the public good. This research explores the extent to which the duties of corporate executives extend beyond shareholder primacy to include responsibly and strategically factoring environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into corporate decision making. An ethnomethodological study was conducted primarily by interviewing corporate executives, corporate social responsibility thought leaders, and ESG practitioners. Legal, management and moral considerations were taken into account to demonstrate the value proposition of aligning long term strategic growth with corporate decision making. The objective of this research is to assist companies to develop practices to meet legal requirements, more effectively manage their business and address the needs of shareholders and other stakeholders in an increasingly complex and globalized society.
