The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between Work Family Conflict (WFC) and cultural styles. We particularly focused on two different types of WFC; WIF (Work Interfering with Family) conflict and FIW (Family Interfering with Work) conflict and the two dimensions that measure cultural styles: individualism and collectivism. The vast majority of past research studying WFC in the US and other western countries has done very little comparative work to explore cultural differences. Therefore, the intention of this study was to explore the interface of work and family in a multi-layered comparison to investigate how people from different cultures cope with these types of conflict. This study included participants (N=210) working for an automotive organization in four different countries: the US (n =85), France (n=45), Mexico (n=36) and China (n=44). Following past research, large differences in the degree of individualism-collectivism between the four countries were expected. However, contrary to findings of previous studies, the results of this study indicated no significant differences between employees from the US, France, Mexico and China on cultural styles, particularly on the dimension of individualism-collectivism. Therefore, we could not compare WFC and coping mechanisms between the four countries. The present study's results did provide further support to the relationship between WIF and different support mechanisms from work related sources (i.e., supervisor support and work social support) and between FIW and support from work unrelated sources (i.e., spouse, family and friends). It was also found that vertical individualists suffer more from WFC in comparison to horizontal individualists. Implications of the above findings are discussed along with study limitations and areas for future research.
