This study conducts in-depth interviews to explore how top editors of three men's magazines, three women's magazines, and four general interest magazines position their title and edit the content according to that positioning.

The research reveals that editors of all three magazine categories have some common editorial practices: They all want their article to have an identifiable tone to better communicate with the readers. They, to different extents, try to make their magazine more accessible by using different editorial tools, etc.

In contrast, general interest magazine editors care more about the journalistic and literary aspects of their magazine than accessibility issues. They tend to think that heavy reporting, good writing; and deep editing ultimately makes a good magazine and draws the target readers in.
