Thesis (M.A.)--Queen's University (Canada), 2007.
The subject of this thesis is the censorship of the blogosphere in China. Censorship of the internet is one of the replies given by the rulers to the intensified struggles by various social forces in the digital era, including the extreme right and the radical forms of leftism and nationalism. This thesis applies the analytics of the governmentality developed by Nikolas Rose to examine the censorship regime on MSN Spaces' China portal site. The analysis focuses on three dimensions: (1) how is the blogosphere transformed into a governable space; (2) how are bloggers objectified and rendered governable; (3) how are alliances between various agencies formed to exercise surveillance and censorship. The investigation highlights that through access control, filtering system, Code of Conduct, peer-to-peer watch, and various techniques, MSN Spaces is constructed as a ground for various agencies, including the state, Microsoft, and the audience, to exercise surveillance and censorship. Following the analytics of governmentality, this thesis proposes that power be treated as an effect formed by various agencies.
