Thomas Jefferson and Mencius: On human nature and democracy.
Phillips, David Dao-wei.
Thomas Jefferson and Mencius: On human nature and democracy.
- 53 p.
Adviser: Regina Titunik.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Hawai'i at Hilo, 2007.
With many countries looking for ways of adopting democratic principles into their governmental institutions, the importance of what steps are necessary for this to occur should not be overlooked. In the United States we often take for granted that democracy is a key ingredient to our success without realizing the basic components that were vital for democracy to work in the first place. This writer holds that religious tolerance, a belief in the goodness of the people, and trust in Heaven are all vital. As will be shown, Mencius and Thomas Jefferson held similar views.
