This study examines the determinants of worker productivity. It investigates whether men and women invest in different determinants of productivity and whether these investments have different effects on their productivity. Hypotheses are tested from human and social capital theories and more direct measures are proposed to test family-time investments and family-friendly firm arguments using secondary data from 671 Alberta law firm lawyers. Results indicate men and women's productivity is similarly affected by their investments, despite men investing more in their careers and women dedicating more time to their families. Surprisingly, men and women report similar levels of productivity. Additional analyses show equally productive men and women are equally efficient and financially rewarded in their jobs. Women, however, report greater role overload partly as a result of more involvement in family responsibilities. These findings further our understanding of worker productivity from a sociological perspective and for studying family-time investments and family-friendly characteristics more directly.
