The increased number of Japanese women who have come to the United States to pursue graduate education needs to be recognized as a unique phenomenon. For those women, study abroad in the United States for a higher degree has become a tool to expand perspectives and explore opportunities. However, despite the numerical visibility of Japanese women students, their voices and experiences are "invisible" in American higher education.

520 $a By using a metaphor of a cat's cradle as a way to weave their multiple positionalities within two different cultural frameworks, this study explores the ways in which multiple positionalities of Japanese women international students are negotiated through a critical examination of their narratives. Specific attention is paid to key positionalities, such as gender, race, ethnicity, social class, and foreign status in order to investigate how Japanese women international graduate students in the United States make sense of their lives and these postionalities, especially when confronting stereotypes and expectations attached to each positionality.
520 $a This study is an authentic reflection on the personal, social, emotional, and theoretical aspects of eight Japanese women international graduate students. It borrows its theoretical and methodological framework from feminist critical perspectives, the concept of positionality, narrative analysis with both phenomenology and life history approaches in order to investigate the lives of these eight selected from three universities from the Midwestern area of the United States.
520 $a This study demonstrates the way in which the eight women play their own cat's cradle: their perceptions of each positionality as well as the interconnected nature of their positionalities within two different cultural frameworks. This study also reveals different kinds of issues that these women encounter; thus, it provides better understandings of the complexities of cross-cultural experiences and the ensuing impact on students' positionalities.
