OHV riding has been one of the fastest-growing outdoor recreational activities nationwide in the last ten years, and managing OHV use has become a challenge for many public land-management agencies. This study examined the motivations, resource attribute preferences, experience level, vehicle use, and demographic characteristics of Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) riders in New York State. This study also examined the rider's support for management actions and rider's perception of potential problems related to OHV riding. The purpose of this research is to improve management of OHV riding by providing managers with information that will aid in the development of programs, policies, and riding areas that meet the needs of OHV riders in an effective and sustainable manner.

520 $a Data was collected with a mail-back survey of OHV club members in New York State. Principal Component Analysis was used to clarify categories of resource attribute preferences, and correlations were found between these factors and many of the management action and potential problem items. The factors found serve as the basis for a set of cluster analyses using the Two-Step method. The cluster analyses provide information about the specific characteristics and needs of different groups of OHV riders. Findings showed that information and parking, rules and signs, and the natural setting were some of the most important resource attributes for riders, and that riders with strong social and skill development motivations felt that many of the resource attribute categories were of high importance. Riders were aware of potential problems related to the activity and supported all of the management actions described. Management implications of these findings are discussed.
