Thesis (M.S.)--Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, 2007.
Prior investigations of the structure of emotional experience in adults suggested that negative affectivity is associated with both depression and anxiety, while positive affectivity is negatively correlated with only depression. However, subsequent tests of this two-factor (2F) model of positive and negative affect in older adults suggested that the 2F model might be inadequate for characterizing the structure of affect in older adults. This study evaluated the structure of emotion in older adults using confirmatory factor analyses of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. In addition, the relationships of identified factors with measures of anxiety and depression were examined. Both a 2F and three-factor (3F) model fit the data reasonably well. However, confirmation of the 3F model required considerable statistical modification, and the two emerging negative affect factors in the 3F model did not differentially relate to anxiety and depression. Thus, an evaluation of the relationship of these factor structures with measures of emotion suggested that a 2F model is more parsimonious and demonstrates stronger relations with subordinate measures of positive and negative affect. Greater understanding of the affective experience of older adults has implications for the conceptualization, assessment and treatment of anxiety and depression in late-life.Subjects--Topical Terms:
