Personality traits and values both represent characteristics of individual that are expected to impact an individual's motivation, yet the two constructs are rarely examined simultaneously. As a result, we lack a nuanced theoretical understanding of how these constructs are similar and how they are unique. Likewise, theory has not explicated how these constructs might uniquely impact motivation (and motivated behavior).

520 $a This study examined the constructs of personality and values as predictors of motivated behavior. It presented and tested a theoretical model in which the personality traits of Conscientiousness and Emotional Stability were expected to influence goal striving (effort and persistence in goal pursuit), while values were expected to influence goal content (the content of goals that individuals chose to pursue).
520 $a The model was tested by examining goals (and goal striving) across six goal content domains that were expected to be important to college students (the population that was sampled). The results were largely supportive of the theoretical model; values were strongly related to the goals that individuals chose to pursue across all six domains, and Conscientiousness was related to goal striving for five of the six goal content domains. Emotional Stability was only related to goal striving for one goal content domain, though this may have been a function of the setting.
520 $a The findings of this study demonstrate that personality and values are unique (though related) constructs, and that both influence motivation, but in different ways. Values primarily influence the types of goals that individuals choose to pursue, while personality traits (especially, in this study, Conscientiousness) primarily influence the effort and persistence put forth in pursuit of those goals.
