A multiple regression analysis was conducted on three predictor variables: family newspaper literacy practices in childhood, newspaper experiences in K-12 education, and civic interest. All three factors correlated significantly with the criterion, a habit of newspaper reading in college students. However, the relationships were moderate to weak. Consistent with previous research, family newspaper literacy practices correlated more strongly to later newspaper reading habits than the other two factors.

Results of the questionnaire indicate weak newspaper usage among college students. On average the participants read a newspaper about 15 minutes, once a week. Family newspaper literacy practices were strong. K-12 newspaper exposure and civic interest were moderate. Students' other media use and preferences include Internet and television, although they rank newspapers as more accurate and credible than these sources of information. Recommendations include further research on media uses and preferences of college students as well as a study of how early exposure to high-quality newspaper experiences in school and civics education may impact newspaper readership and citizenship.
