- 45 p.
Adviser: Jeffrey Koob.
Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2007.
The purpose of this study was to explore Mexican descent fathers' perceptions on their own involvement in their son's life as measured by perceptions on paternal responsibility, paternal availability, and paternal interaction. The study utilized a nonprobability purposeful convenience sample that consisted of 30 men of Mexican descent. The major finding showed that those fathers that did not live with their children found father involvement more important in ways of paternal responsibility, availability, and interaction, than did residential fathers. A disproportionate number, 93% of the sample felt that mothers were more natural caregivers than fathers. The mean score was 4.23 and the mode was 4. This response related to the low sense of responsibility this sample had in regards to the possibility of their sons being incarcerated.
