The researcher interviewed 13 Latinas utilizing a snowball sample to explore their beliefs and attitudes about mental health services. Latinas identified that mental health consumers utilized mental health services because they acknowledged that there was a need to seek professional help. Experiencing marital and family problems was the primary reason given by participants for seeking mental health services. Cultural remedies to treat mental health problems included drinking tea, consulting with folk healers and priests. Several of the participant's misconceptions involved labeling an individual as a crazy person if they received mental health treatment. Barriers that affected Latinas utilization of mental health services included language, economics, and immigration fears.
