Traditional accounts of the development of post-authoritarian democracies have focused on the role of sociological and institutional factors in stimulating party system fragmentation. A strong historical legacy of patrimonial communism in post-communist Bulgaria, however, resulted in an uncharacteristically low effective number of parties during the initial stage of the Bulgarian transition. The presence of major parties that possessed an organizational head-start and politicized the main ideological cleavage of the transition resulted in the emergence of a virtually bipolar mode of political competition during the first four democratic elections in the country. Since, the waning of the regime cleavage and a severe economic crisis have upset the party system equilibrium by undermining the value of the major parties as strategic coordination devices and have resulted in different type of elite strategies that have increased significantly party system fragmentation.Subjects--Topical Terms:
