World War Two was the most horrible war in world history. It affected millions of human lives including that of artists and musicians. This dissertation discusses three cello sonatas by Prokofiev, Poulenc, and Carter, written shortly after WWII. One should pay specific attention to the effect WWII had on these composers and how the post war environment manifests itself in these three works.

Each of these composers lived in different countries where they were affected by WWII in widely differing ways. Carter had a sheltered and safe life in the USA. He did serve in the US military by working at the United States Office of War Information. Poulenc saw his hometown occupied by Nazis, and his country later liberated. Prokofiev's country was deceived and later invaded by the Nazis and St. Petersburg, then Leningrad, experienced one of the worst periods in its history during the 900 day siege. As a result styles and techniques of these three composers vary widely in spite of choosing the same instrumentation for these works.

This dissertation discusses interpretive choices for performers regarding each work. I have provided etudes and suggestions, such as pedaling and phrasing. I also have provided a historical context for each work with discussion of economic and human reaction and response to WWII and the resulting musical effects.
