Thesis (D.M.A.)--Arizona State University, 2007.
In the spring of 1892, a young musician named Giuseppe Ferrata arrived in Emmitsburg, Maryland, from Rome, Italy to establish a career in America as a composer and pianist. For the next thirty-six years, he held teaching and administrative positions at five music colleges in the south and east, spending the majority of his time at Sophie Newcomb College (now Tulane University) in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was recognized as both an inspiring educator able to stimulate the growth of each musical institution with which he was affiliated, and an important composer in the United States in the early twentieth century.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Ferrata's published musical output encompasses several genres: works for solo piano, violin and piano, art songs, chorus, organ, and chamber ensemble. His undated and unpublished works include three operas as well as music for orchestra, piano, art songs, chamber ensemble and chorus. His works were widely performed in the United States in the early 1900's, but fell out of favor within twenty-five years after his death.

Ferrata's art songs constitute roughly a quarter of his works and were composed throughout his life. His compositional style reflects the influence of not only his rich Italian heritage, but also other well-known composers, including his teacher Franz Liszt. In his later works influences of Strauss, Wagner and Debussy are also evident. His songs can be considered some of the best examples of his talent in composing in the nineteenth century miniature and deserve to be re-examined. This document presents a performer's guide to his art songs, focusing on musical analysis and performance aspects important to both the singer and the collaborative pianist. An appendix of performance programs is included from the archives at Jones Hall on the Tulane University campus in New Orleans, Louisiana.
