520 $a The act of corporate worship, though encompassing nearly all the senses, is primarily aural. Since the transmission process is aural, the experiences must be heard with sufficient volume and quality in order to be effective. The character and magnitude of the sound-producing elements are significant in the process, but it is the nature of the enclosing space that is even more crucial. Every building will, by its size, shape, and materials, act upon all sounds produced, affecting not only the amount, but also the quality of sound reaching the listeners' ears.
520 $a The purpose of this project was to determine appropriate acoustical goals for worship spaces, and to propose design strategies to achieve these goals. Acoustic goals were determined by examination of the results of previously conducted subjective preference studies, computer plotting of virtual sources, and experimentation in actual spaces. Determinations also take into account the sensory inhibition factors in the processing of sound by the human auditory system.
