Most, if not all, of the literature on atheism (typically written by theists) has suggested that there are significant moral, psychological, and behavioral flaws among this perceived deviant group. Research supports the notion that society has a strong negative bias against atheists. They are often perceived as having significant moral, psychological and behavioral flaws which maintains centuries old beliefs about them. Atheists, defined as persons who reject all religious beliefs and the existence of God, have been described as immoral and deviant, and are commonly thought to be more likely to engage in criminal and immoral behaviors.

Religion is thought to provide moral guidance, as well as rules that govern appropriate behavior. There is empirical evidence that seems to support this notion, in that religious involvement is negatively correlated with social problems and criminal behaviors. Religious people are also thought to be more psychologically healthy. Conversely, this leads to beliefs that people who are not religious or do not believe in God must not be healthy. This monograph offers challenges to that perception.
