Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama, 2007.
The purpose of this study is to explore how and why students incorporate religiosity into their daily college experience, and the impact of such incorporation. In this case, daily college experience is difficult to define, but is the curricular activities perceived to be lived by students on a daily basis while attending college. This could include but is not limited too classroom instruction, study groups, labs, traversing to and from class, and independent study. These activities can take place at a myriad of locations on or around campus such as the classroom, library, residence hall, parking lots, and co-curricular facilities. The intent of this study is to present an objective, empirical perspective to the relationship between student's religiosity and their daily college experience.

A purposive sampling strategy and snowball techniques were utilized in the selection of participants in order to ensure a diverse, "information-rich" sample. The broadest possible range of faith systems were included in the sample, and sampling continued until saturation was reached. The most appropriate way to evaluate the lived experience is through a phenomenological approach which employs individual consciousness as the unit of analysis. This study is guided primarily by the work of Van Mannen as an expert on researching the lived experience of individuals. Eleven focus groups with eighty-four undergraduate students were conducted to ascertain what beliefs students held as fundamental to understanding students' lived experience in regards to religion and spirituality, and how such religion and spirituality relate to their college experience.

From the results and in addition to informing theory and practice of student development and student affairs administration, the data collection and analysis and the subsequent conclusions yield theoretical as well as pragmatic solutions for institutions of higher education as related to the development of the "whole" student. In addition to potentially providing a deeper understanding of student profile at The University of Alabama, issues in student affairs such as ethical development, benefits of civic engagement, character and value enhancement, and rich development of learning experiences could be addressed in subsequent studies.
