An important function of the vocal pedagogue is to contribute to the discipline of vocal instruction and to aspire toward a more homogeneous collaboration with medical and clinical fields. The vocal pedagogue of the twenty-first century should serve as a mediator between medicinal and clinical specialties and the artistry of the vocal instructor. The prime vehicle for maintaining this collaboration includes translating clinical and scientific terminology into an understandable and applicable methodology for vocal pedagogues and voice teachers.

This document is an examination of collaborative literature of the medicinal and clinical with the musical world, focusing on the rise and function of the vocologist and the singing specialist as an additional resource for the vocal pedagogue. In addition to these vocal specialties, this study bridges terminology related to the fields of otolaryngology and speech-language pathology with that of vocal pedagogy, and demonstrates valid applicability to the knowledge and awareness of the vocal pedagogue. Terminology explored and analyzed include breathing, phonation, resonance, acoustics, proprioception, laryngeal "placement," timbre, vowel modification, register, and registration.
