The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between accent and intelligibility in non-native English speakers (NNES), assess NNES' self perception of communicative abilities, and compare native speaker's ratings with self-perception data. An isolated group of 10 non-native English speakers (NNES) and 5 native English speakers participated in the study. Native speakers heard speech samples of NNES and assigned accent and intelligibility ratings based on a scale of 1-7. Results indicated that a positive correlation exists between accent and intelligibility; stronger accents were found to be less intelligible. NNES rated "home" as the most important context and that which required the most effort, and felt they were best able to communicate at "work/school."
