The objective of this study was to validate extrusion die designs using flow simulation software. Multi lumen extrusion dies were modeled for typical catheter designs using a popular three dimensional modeling package called SolidWorks. The software used for analysis was CFDesign distributed by Blue Ridge Numerics Inc. The flow simulation through this die was analyzed.

520 $a The die was manufactured and the results from the final product were correlated with respect to the simulated results as well as the calculated results. The rheological database of the material used for the manufacturing of this product was also determined and uploaded into the material database of the software. Changes in the die outer diameter and land length were done to check the efficiency of the software with respect to the actual results. Other design changes were made to bring about a uniform velocity were also done and the results compared with the experimental results.
520 $a The software had the ability to predict flow instability and difference in the pressure drop and velocity at the outlet. It was efficient in showing the difference contributed by subtle changes of .003 inch change in the outer diameter of the die. Though it was an effective simulator mostly dealing with Newtonian fluids it was also customized to be used for extrusion simulation. Simulations of drastic design changes as well as subtle changes were made to check the differences in the results and dimensions changes in the final product.
