My dissertation project examines the rhetoric of strength in literary and visual representations of black women throughout the African Diaspora. I am essentially asking: What do artistic productions "remember" about black women and prowess? How do these memories reify pervasive stereotypes about the "strength" and "power" of black women? This interdisciplinary project interrogates structures of both dominant and counter narratives concerning slavery, and elucidates the precarious position they embody concerning history, memory, and corporeal demand. I am interested in the ways these corporeal demands are played out in poetry, fiction, and visual images throughout the black Diaspora.

I argue that cultural productions place black women of the Diaspora at a strategic midpoint between immeasurable resilience and physical invulnerability, a hyper visible/invisible dichotomy insistent upon repetition to render itself perpetually true. If cultures are convinced of the "inner armor" black women supposedly possess, no trauma will seem too traumatic; no wound will appear too deeply imbedded to be theorized out of existence. It is the perception of black women's physical, sexual, maternal, and regenerative powers which lend to the air of impenetrability associated with their artistic representations. My dissertation investigates the artistic molding of history in favor of celebratory success and the residual denial of full-scale humanity left in its wake.
