Chair: Gregory Smith.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Maryland, College Park, 1997.
This dissertation tested a theoretical model of key antecedents to state orientation among a sample of community college students (n = 541) using structural equation modeling. Constructs from the domains of socialization, motivation, emotion, and self regulation were integrated into a theoretical model of key antecedents to state orientation. Four socialization variables (parental psychological autonomy granting, parental involvement/acceptance, family support/integration and family challenge/differentiation) were hypothesized to have positive direct effects on self-determined motivation. Self-determined motivation was hypothesized to have positive direct effects on mood-regulation expectancies. In turn, parental involvement/acceptance was hypothesized to have positive direct effects on mood-regulation expectancies. Mood-regulation expectancies were hypothesized to have inverse direct effects on state orientation.

The proposed model was evaluated using the maximum likelihood procedure of LISREL 7 in which measurement error variance of each latent variable was derived by multiplying the variance of its indicator by one, minus the reliability estimate of that indicator. Then, the theta delta and the epsilon matrices were constrained to assume values of the derived error variances.

In the first test of the model, some standardized path coefficients exceeded the traditional range of 0 to 1.00; thus, error variance was eliminated. All standardized path coefficients were then found to be below 1.00. The model again showed good fit ($\chi\sp2$ = 37.20, df = 8, p =.000, GFI =.981, AGFI =.934). LISREL 7 diagnostic modification indices suggested the addition of two theoretically sensible pathways (from family support/integration and family challenge/differentiation to mood-regulation expectancies). These pathways were then added to the model and this further improved model fit ($\chi\sp2$ = 7.96, df = 6, p =.246, GFI =.996, AGFI =.981). Model variables were not found to be influenced by demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, high school grades, college grades, parental education).
