Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2008.
The current study investigates the nature of the relationship between critical thinking disposition and the degree of tolerance using a sample of 161 community college students. A one way analysis of variance found that women had statistically significant positive relationships on Openmindedness (p < .01) and Openness to Diversity (p < .05). A statistically significant positive relationship was found with Family Perspective on Diversity as well. Participants where diversity was never discussed had higher scores that demonstrated a statistically significant positive relationship on CCTDI Total Score (p < .01), Openness to Diversity (p < .01), Truthseeking ( p < .05), CT Self-Confidence (p < .05), and Cognitive Maturity (p < .05). In addition, a statistically significant positive relationship was found for students who had taken or were currently enrolled in two or more diversity classes and Openmindedness (p < .01), Openness to Diversity (p < .01) and CCTDI Total Score (p < .05). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were also performed using Openness to Diversity as the dependent variable. Using a model that used demographic variables and subscales of the CCTDI as predictor variables, 53.1% of Openness to Diversity was accounted for by the predictor variables (p < .000), with statistically significant positive relationships found for Openmindedness and Openness to Diversity (p < .000) and Inquisitiveness and Openness to Diversity (p < .004). A regression analysis performed with CCTDI Total score controlled for the demographic variables found that 42.8% of Openness to Diversity was accounted for by the predictor variables used (p < .000), with statistically significant positive relationships found between Total CCTDI scores and Openness to Diversity ( p < .000), Family Perspective on Diversity and Openness to Diversity (p < .030), and Diversity Classes Taken and Openness to Diversity (p < .008). The findings provide further data regarding the importance of diversity classes in increasing tolerance. Further research is recommended regarding the impact on tolerance that familial perspective on diversity might have.
