Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Chicago, 2007.
School social work is one of social work's oldest established subspecialties, and Illinois has one of its largest concentrations of professional school social workers in the country. School social workers from other states often envy the size and organization of school social work in Illinois. Indeed, next to New York State, it is the largest group of school social workers in the entire nation. The size and well-established history of school social work in Illinois made Illinois school social workers a useful population to study to assess the state of school social work in 2006.

Data obtained from this study (n=821) found that an overwhelming majority of Illinois school social workers rate their job satisfaction as high, and their practice choices are largely unaffected by the school culture/climate issues around them. The majority of school social workers in Illinois reported spending most of their time immersed in serving the demands of the special education/IEP process, and fewer report having time to do prevention work or deliver school social work services to a significant number of students in regular education. In this way, school social work in Illinois appears to be based on the "core technology" of special education IEP mandates and individual and small group counseling, rather than any of the recent practice innovations of the past two decades.
