520 $a The study of fashion as social history remains a small discipline whose focus is costume and textiles. My research explores the history of appearance and illustrates the historical, visual, and material culture viewpoints to contemplate meanings and uses of clothing by people of African descent. My objective was to produce a visual and written construction of social criticism which would illustrate that the mainstream does not represent sameness, but instead celebrates the beautiful mosaic and individuality of all, and to initiate an intelligent discourse.
