Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 2006.
Pantheatre, a company founded by Enrique Pardo in France, offers an approach to actor training that springs from James Hillman's archetypal psychology, and therefore emphasizes imagination, Psyche, and soul. Pantheatre training stands in contrast to much contemporary actor training in the United States, which has followed the method of Freud by centralizing a literalized ego and relying on an intellectualized process to lead to truth and unity on stage. Through Pardo's process of choreographic image-making, the actor finds herself inside the dream, serving as an agent of Psyche rather than in pursuit of truth. This requires the actor to develop negative capability, the capacity to be in uncertainty, to behold rather than to solve mystery, paradox, and contradiction. The primary methodology of this study is performance ethnography, involving my own participation as well as observation. Thus, the evidence presented is derived from participant/observation field notes, interviews, and videotaped workshop sessions as well as from literary analysis.
