The role of interpersonal processes has been neglected in the literature on life satisfaction. The first goal of the present study was to generalize the findings of intrapersonal and extrapersonal influences on life satisfaction within married couples to friendships. The second goal was to determine whether an individual's need for approval moderated the relation between perceived support and friendship satisfaction. Ninety-three friendship pairs from the University of Toronto at Mississauga made self ratings of personality, life satisfaction, friendship satisfaction, need for approval, and perceived support. Consistent with married couples, life satisfaction was predicted by depression and relationship satisfaction, although depression was a stronger predictor in friendship pairs. Only rejection concern moderated the relation between perceived support and friendship satisfaction, whereby demonstrating both construct and predictive validity. Directions for future research included investigation of additional extrapersonal factors that affect life satisfaction in social relationships.
