Performance assessment is an important topic in the field of music education. Rubrics, a means of assessing students' performance, have been successful in evaluating students' progress toward a specific objective in a variety of educational settings. In the National Standards for music, the Music Educators National Conference calls for elementary students' study of instrumental performance. Students in third grade music classes are typically introduced to the soprano recorder. In this study, an assessment rubric was created and implemented in a class of third grade students in order to measure beginning performance skills and techniques associated with sound production. Five classes were videotaped during which the students were taught beginning performance skills in conjunction with the assessment rubric. Then, to determine the validity of the assessment rubric, four certified music educators were asked to view the video and score students' performance. Results indicate that this assessment rubric is a reliable tool for assessing the recorder performance skills of third grade students.
