The responses of students within the sample were analyzed to determine the musical content of the hypotheses. Further, the manner in which the subjects manipulated the hypotheses while attempting to complete the task was studied.

The purpose of this study was the identification, categorization and analysis of musical focus and hypotheses testing techniques used in the development of musical concepts by the 11- to 16-year-old learner. Specifically, the purpose was to: (1) ascertain if 11- to 16-year-old learners adhere to a hypothesis testing technique for aural scanning of musical stimuli when presented with a task which requires analytical listening. (2) categorize the type or combinations of types of scanning strategies employed by learners in musical concept development at one-year intervals between the ages of 11 and 16, (3) categorize the subjects' musical focus in terms of semantic Case Grammar relationships or musical elements at one-year intervals between the ages of 11 and 16.

Results of this study indicate that between the ages of 11 to 16 learners appear to increase their ability to use a hypothesis testing technique for musical concept formation. They also gain the ability to manipulate several hypotheses very suddenly, perhaps due to the emergence of formal operational thought. However, the basic musical knowledge which the learners can tap does not grow noticeably during this period. In short, the hypotheses are the same, but the ability to manipulate the hypotheses expands.
