This multiple case study explores how high school social studies teachers used technological tools in an online course to create meaningful learning activities for their students. The teaching and learning practices of three online courses were investigated. The findings from this study reveal that teachers use a wide variety of tools and approaches in their online courses. Tools are categorized as content, communication, and course management tools. Approaches included a course utilizing Desire2Learn, a bounded course management system, a teacher developed and designed online course, and a project based learning course utilizing Project Foundry, an online management tool created specifically for project based learning. Meaningful learning was observed in all sites. However, key findings reveal that students in each site primarily interacted with their teacher with few instances of peer-to-peer collaborative learning, competing issues (e.g., technology, life skills learning, and other priorities) may replace content area learning in online courses, and students and teachers do not fully utilize available online tools to create meaningful learning.
