The current study investigates the affective, cognitive, and personality correlates of achievement motivation and fear of success, to determine how such factors may be differentially linked to achievement motivation and fear of success in men and women. It was hypothesized that proneness to shame would be inversely correlated with achievement motivation and positively correlated with fear of success in persons of both genders, although these relationships were expected to be strongest for women. It was expected that proneness to shame would account for a greater proportion of the variance in these relationships than other variables such as self-esteem and attributional style. It was also hypothesized that proneness to shame would be linked with traditional sex-role attitudes in women, but not necessarily in men.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Contrary to the hypothesis, proneness to shame was not significantly linked to achievement motivation in persons of either gender. It was positively related to fear of success for both men and women, but there was no gender difference in the strength of this relationship. Although shame-proneness may indirectly affect achievement motivation through fear of success, other variables such as self-esteem and positive attributional style are more directly related to achievement motivation for persons of both genders.

Proneness to shame was not linked to traditional sex-role attitudes in women; a link did exist, however, for men. This relationship may derive from a downward comparison phenomenon in which shame-prone men attempt to feel better about themselves and their capabilities by holding social attitudes which are oppressive to women.
