The population comprised of 100 high school students, male and female, representative of Commonwealth of Northern Marianas, Chuk, Palau, the Philippines and Korea. The technique used to measure the subjects' views toward different types of speech representative of the Chamorro and Carolinian groups was primarily based on a variation of the Matched-Guise technique developed by Lambert, Hodgson, Gardner, and Fillenbaum (1960). The instrument used bipolar adjectives on a nine four-point scale to determine the attitude or perception of the judges on three dimensions: competence, personal integrity and social attractiveness.

A language background questionnaire was completed by the judges to ascertain their relative use and ability in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of English and at least one indigenous language during interaction with parents, siblings, friends, teachers, and other persons. This population of 100 high school students had never been exposed to the Semantic Differential instrument nor the Matched-Guise technique. Since the type of activities were new, the students showed great interest and enthusiasm.

The hypotheses which stated that there would be no significant relationships between gender and ethnicity of judges toward accents of bilingual speakers was tested by an Analysis of Variance with repeated-measures. The results were significant as they indicated that the bilingual Chamorro speakers educated in the United States received the highest scores. The strongest effect of guise was shown by Chamorro judges who evaluated the Chamorro guises more favorably on the whole. Female speakers were rated more favorably than male speakers.
