Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cornell University, 1991.
It has been reported that the pay received by plantation workers in North Sumatra is low and insufficient to satisfy worker's daily needs. If this is so why do the workers, who are mostly Javanese, persist in working on plantations? Although explanations which have been offered by previous studies, they are insufficient to adequately explain the phenomenon fully.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation suggests that various factors specific to Javanese culture enable them to readily accept plantation life and hence influences their decision to remain on or close to the plantation even after their contracts have expired. It indicates that to the Javanese, life on the plantations is rewarding, because it provides for workers basic needs. These needs are not only those related to physical survival, but also to their desire for a life that is tentrem. Tentrem is translated by many writers as tranquility, serenity, composure, and calm. For plantation workers the concept of tentrem is closely related to the absence of disturbance, both economical and social. Plantation life provides some economic and social advantages that are not easily realized outside plantation work. The tentrem feeling of life on plantations is also influenced by the socio-economic conditions outside the plantation such as ethnic conflict which influences Javanese workers to remain on plantations.
