Yu, Wen-Chi.

Adviser: Felicia Hardison Londre.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Missouri - Kansas City, 2004.
Twentieth-century China experienced great upheaval of its political, social and cultural perspectives. At the same time, it was full of strength, vigor and opportunities. The renowned Peking Opera actor, Mei Lanfang, came to stardom on the wings of fortune. He conducted artistic experiments supported by literati, which featured the dramatist, Qi Rushan. Among these new approaches, Mei re-energized the audience first with the costume. Then, with the serious psychological portrayal of characters, he captured the interest of foreigners, encountering Peking Opera for the first time. The changing composition of the audience assisted Mei's interaction with the audience and promoted his artistic transformation. Opinions from his international tours reinforced his enthusiasm for the classical plays. Creating is easy; the difficulty lies in its continuation. Mei Lanfang sought his artistic integrity in a dynamic process. At first, Mei observed, created and waited; later, he formed, revived and led.
