Chapter 3 analyzes the thematic interlace in San Guo. It describes the arrangements of events of the plot as well as the characterizations of major figures in attempting to illustrate the principles of the interlace structure in San Guo.

San Guo stories and Arthurian romances follow a very similar route in their evolutions. Each is based on an oral cycle which keeps growing as it draws upon various sources. As a result, they share many common traits in their transformation from oral stories to the written form. Ferdinard Lot is the first modern scholar to recognize the interlace design in the French prose romances. Eugene Vinaver uses the word "interlace" to describe the pattern of the Arthurian romances. The interlacing structure can also be seen in the chapter-divided form of San Guo Yan-yi. The couplet-title of San Guo is a well-balanced binary structure. When episodes are placed under such a title, they are put on the poles of opposition. The result is the interweaving of two or more strands of story in a chapter. The themes of the disintegration and reunification of an empire give San Guo a form, but the sense of the work as a whole relies more on the binary opposition within chapters and the overall interlacing patterns that unite the complicate romance cycle of the Three Kingdoms stories into one coherent work.

Chapter 2 concerns the formal interlace in San Guo. It deals with the paired chapter titles which reflect the interlaced dual content of each chapter. The San Guo prose narrative is further interrupted by embedded poems. The linearity of the narrative is replaced by a verbal mode of dysjunction, and these disconnected and yet juxtaposed pieces maintain the rhythm of the novel.
