This study looks into the nature of heterogeneity within the staff of one human service program and at diversity of views on practice among this collection of persons. Heterogeneity within the staff of this program consisted of differences along such various dimensions of social identity as race, ethnicity, social class, gender, professional background, and organizational position. The staff of this program was also characterized by diversity of view on various points of professional practice. This study offers an account of how such many various dimensions of difference would become woven together over the life course of one particular program.

Among the thematic strands picked out as being of particular relevance to understanding this staff were differences of view on the work at hand, as, for example, in a divide among staff on the question of whether the program, Broad Oak, was about research or about service delivery to clients. Also, there were differences within staff in how individuals looked at one another in terms of Black and White. Race mattered in Broad Oak. How it mattered is explored in this study. Yet another strand in the Broad Oak story is recovery ideology, and a contrast between two alternative emphases in practice--one, on adults and their problems with alcohol and other drugs, and the other, a focus on early childhood education. These various strands of difference and similarity did not map over one another in simple ways, yet, over the years, they became woven together in a texture that was distinctive to the life of Broad Oak.

This study stands as an example of a way to consider identity at work. It invites questions about how we might be preparing early childhood educators for work in such settings as Broad Oak. Finally, some implications of this study for early intervention research are explored.
