This dissertation seeks to employ the methods of literary criticism, particularly its findings regarding the portrayal of character in texts, in an examination of the character of God in several passages from the rabbinic commentaries of Exodus Rabbah 42-44. This particular section contains rabbinic expansions of the account in the Hebrew Bible book of Exodus 32:7-14 of the argument that occurs between God and the prophet Moses during the golden calf incident. The sages, who tended to emphasize God's mercy and loving kindness over God's judgment and wrath, crafted a number of fascinating midrashim in Exodus Rabbah 42-44 in which they portrayed Moses as a clever negotiator who provides an array of motivations for God not to consume the people for their sin. They presented arguing with the deity, also known as the arguing-with-God motif, as a proper response when confronted with a divine decision that appeared unfair.

520 $a This dissertation discusses the law-court pattern of prayer and its use of legal terminology, and the portrayal of God as an "ungodly" character in selected passages from the Hebrew Bible. The focus then turns to rabbinic literature. Here concerns include the law-court prayer in rabbinic texts, various aspects of the sages' reading practices, such as the role of Hebrew Bible textual ambiguities, and the application of literary-critical tools, particularly with regard to characterization, to rabbinic literature.
520 $a The central part of this dissertation is the exegetical analysis of the parables, law-court prayers, and other midrashim found in Exodus Rabbah 42-44. This analysis applies the insights especially of Anson Laytner and Patrick Miller regarding the law-court prayers and those of David Stern concerning the form of the rabbinic parable. Each prayer and parable is discussed in detail. For the prayers the motivational clauses that Moses uses to convince God not to destroy Israel are highlighted for how they present God's character. In the parables, the rabbis crafted fictional accounts of an easily angered king (or another character, such as a wise man) that were meant to comment upon the portrayal of God in Exodus 32:7-14. These examples demonstrate that the rabbis overwhelmingly approved of Moses' contentiousness in the face of God's excessive anger, with Moses emerging as the winner in each of the prayers and parables.
520 $a The dissertation continues with a discussion of the implications of Moses' arguing with God for rabbinic theology and authority. In particular it argues that David Blumenthal's theology of protest characterizes the rabbinic stance regarding the behavior of Moses and God during the golden calf episode. It further contends that the rabbis inserted their teachings into Moses' mouth to boost their authority. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of how an examination of God's characterization and the role of argumentation in other biblical and rabbinic texts might profitably be pursued.
