Nathan, Aaron Matthew.
The concept of the living.
- 416 p.
Chair: David Cohen.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 2003.
This dissertation is a recursive examination of an error in the logical underpinnings of modern social theory: an unproven reliance upon the moral characterizations of life by the living within social theoretical attempts to define the principles or forces that make up society. The dissertation analyzes the theoretical works of Durkheim, Mauss, Weber, Foucault, Luhmann and others to explain the nature of this foundational error in the discipline, and uses examples from international humanitarian law, public health, medicine, scientific research, engineering, information technology and intellectual property among other areas, along with an assortment of purely hypothetical scenarios, to elaborate the nuances of this error.
