In an effort to enhance employee development and professionalize the field of interpretation, the National Park Service (NPS) launched its "Interpretive Development Program" (IDP) in 1997. Although this program was developed by over 300 field interpreters, is based in interpretive tenets, and defines the NPS's standards for interpretation, there has been significant polarization among NPS employees regarding its value. This study explored the understandings, attitudes, and overall experiences of permanent, "full performance" (GS-9) interpreters and first-line (GS-11) interpretive supervisors in regard to the IDP Training and Peer Review Certification Programs, as well as sought to understand the formation of those understandings and attitudes, via an electronic survey method.

520 $a A variety of personal and organizational factors were found to significantly influence the survey participants' understandings, attitudes and overall experience regarding the IDP Training and Peer Review Certification Programs. Study results: (1) provide insight for administrators regarding barriers to the Program's service-wide acceptance and adoption; (2) provide suggestions for supervisors/managers regarding means to facilitate broader understandings, more favorable attitudes, and better overall experiences associated with the IDP; and, (3) offer guidance for other organizations intending to implement strategic change to their employee training and/or certification programs.
