Thesis (M.S.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2007.
Unobtrusive observational data were collected to determine visitor utilization of interpretive waysides at Muir Woods National Monument in California. The data collected through video camera and digital audio equipment took place over a 28 day period during the summer of 2006. The objectives of this study were to: determine the degree of utilization of the 15 waysides by park visitors, determine the observable characteristics of the visitors who utilize the waysides, document specific behaviors that indicate interaction with the wayside exhibit, and determine if identifiable traits of wayside exhibits affect visitor utilization. Over 11,500 visitors were observed during 30 hours of taping. Visitors stopped at rates ranging between 4%--63% and spent between 3--365 seconds at the individual waysides. Wayside relevance to the site seems to an important factor in determining the number of learning behaviors exhibited. The more relevant waysides to the immediate site evoked the greatest number of learning behaviors.
