520 $a The primary purpose of this thesis is to discuss, explore, and critically examine the direction(s) and role(s) of contemporary anthropology, its growth, and its future trends as they support the continuation of the holistic discipline in the 21st century. Although subfield specialization can be vital to pursuing unique issues of anthropological scope, a possible result may be continuing fragmentation and increasing specialization which could have dramatic consequences. If anthropology's roles are not clearly defined in the 21st century, anthropology runs the risk of becoming irrelevant, being pushed aside by other disciplines, or of making itself obsolete. In this thesis I argue that anthropology will remain relevant and continue its holistic perspective by addressing four factors: (1) encouraging cross-subfield engagement and communication; encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration; (2) increasing application of anthropological methods and research outside of the traditional realm of anthropology into other fields; (3) increasing employment opportunities; and (4) adopting an introspective perspective that focuses on redefining or broadening of the function of anthropology in the contemporary world, as well as allowing anthropologists to internalize much needed leadership roles.
