- 127 p.
Adviser: Dan Jorgensen.
Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Western Ontario (Canada), 1995.
Contemporary China is a multiethnic state comprising 55 officially recognized minority nationalities and the dominant Han nationality. Unlike many other countries, China has made minorities policy central to its constitutional definition, and this fact reflects the importance of minority nationalities in the state's view of the nation.

In this thesis I examine the state's approach to the definition and recognition of minority nationalities by looking at a number of concrete cases in terms of both policy and theory. Central questions explored include why minorities want to claim status as officially recognized nationalities, and what the state's interests are in controlling the process of ethnic identification. Particular attention is paid to the contradictory ways in which official definitions of nationality are modified by Chinese scholars in order to fit various situations. In the course of this examination, I compare the views of Western and Chinese scholars on the definition of ethnic group, ethnic identity, and ethnicity. I conclude that ethnicity in China is in part shaped by the underlying assumptions of Chinese scholars and state policy.
