520 $a The research is conducted through historical study, dance analysis, and esthetic analysis. It also utilizes videotape viewing and interviews. The historical investigation explores the motivations and ideals of Chinese ballet creation in Taiwan and mainland China between 1954 and 1994. It also examines existing national ballet styles in order to evaluate the eclectic approach in Chinese ballet that was intended to create a "Chinese style." One particular Chinese ballet, The White-haired Girl , is chosen as the subject for dance analysis for a better understanding of this hybrid form. The analytic method applied is a modified version of Janet Adshead's Dance Analysis Method, analyzing a videotape of The White-haired Girl in addition to interviewing the choreographer and performers of this ballet. The esthetic analysis focuses on illustrating the esthetic coherence and conflicts between classical ballet and traditional Chinese dance. Examples from The White- haired Girl and other art forms are provided to illustrate their esthetic disparities.
520 $a The primary motivation of Chinese ballet is Chinese ethnic pride. Chinese ballet artists wanted to create a "Chinese style" of ballet and gain international recognition. However, the eclectic creative approach employed has proved to be problematic. Through comparison with existing national ballet styles, which are based on the technique and esthetics of classical ballet, Chinese ballet is shown to be a futile effort to create a Chinese national ballet style. Since the hybrid form created contains salient Chinese dance technique and dance esthetics, quite different from those of classical ballet, Chinese ballet is in fact a new dance genre, not a ballet style.
520 $a In addition, the amalgamation of these two dance forms creates conspicuous conflicting aesthetic qualities, which are displayed in "explicit against implicit" expressions, "grace against force," "vertical against circular" movement, "eccentric against concentric" motion, and "fluidity" against "stillness" emphasis. These conflicts in Chinese ballet inevitably undermined its artistic values and, consequently, caused its failure to gain international recognition.
